ASIG Manchester spill drill

BBA Aviation locations regularly supplement their spill response planning activities with real situation exercises involving external parties to test procedures. In June 2010, to coincide with Shell Aviation's annual safety day, ASIG Manchester organised a safety event to raise awareness amongst staff and third parties on the airport of the importance of operating safely at all times.

Senior guests from Shell's head office in London were invited to attend. The event took the form of a simulated fuel spill caused by a driver manoeuvring too close to a fuel coupling point - a practice which had been noted as part of ASIG's near miss reporting activity.

As well as highlighting the importance of safe practices, the event was also seen as an opportunity to check the suitability of the processes in place to deal with such a spill.

The event was planned and led by members of the ASIG team, with the agreement of Manchester Airport Operations. Teams from various third parties, including the Fire Service, airport security and air traffic control were also involved.
